Who We Are

The Order of Saint Augustine comprises over 2800 Augustinians in 47 countries worldwide, making a profound impact through their ministries and dedication to Christian ideals. In the United States, the Augustinians operate three regional provinces, sponsoring esteemed institutions like Villanova University and Merrimack College, along with various high schools and parishes.

Our History

The history of the Augustinian Order dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, marked by a fascinating blend of divine grace and human effort. The Order's origins trace to a dynamic era of lay spirituality, where individuals like John Bono and William of Malavalle inspired fervent communities devoted to prayer, penance, and Gospel values.

In December 1243, Pope Innocent IV issued a Papal Bull calling for the unification of Tuscan hermits under the Rule of Saint Augustine, laying the foundation for the Augustinian Order. Subsequent Papal Bulls extended the Order's reach, emphasizing a unique form of religious life characterized by contemplation and apostolic ministry.

Arrival in North America

The Augustinians' missionary zeal led them to North America in the late 18th century, responding to the call for priests in the newly established United States. The pioneering efforts of Rev. John Rosseter and Rev. Matthew Carr established the Order's presence in Philadelphia, marking the beginning of a journey that would expand across the continent.

Today's Mission

Presently, Augustinians live and minister in over 40 countries, embodying St. Augustine's vision of uniting people for the glory of God and the service of humanity. Through preaching, education, community-building, and global outreach, the Augustinians continue to make a lasting impact on individuals and communities worldwide.
