Daughters of St. Mary of Providence

About Us

Our Sisters came to the United States in 1913 at the request of Pope Pius X, a long time friend and confidant of St. Guanella. Guanella visited various cities in the United States mostly in the East. He chose to begin the works of the Congregation however in Chicago where the first Sisters ministered to the Italian immigrants and their families. They taught school and later started to build a residential home and school with the focus of caring for the mentally and physically challenged.

More Details

The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence (DSMP), also known as the Guanellian Sisters after their founder St. Louis Guanella, are dedicated to serving those in need through a life of prayer, community, and service. Their mission is to be instruments of Providence, extending their efforts wherever serious needs arise.

Ministry Work

The sisters engage in various ministries, including education, healthcare, and social services, supporting people from toddlers to seniors. They operate schools, healthcare facilities, and community outreach programs, providing both physical and spiritual assistance. Their work includes providing food, shelter, and pastoral care, embodying their charism of unlimited charity.

Daily Life and Mission

Daily life for the sisters revolves around the Eucharist, communal prayers, and active ministry. Their day begins with morning prayers, including the Liturgy of the Hours and Mass, fostering a deep spiritual connection. They spend their afternoons dedicated to their ministries, which involve hands-on service to those in need. Evenings include Vespers and reflection, allowing the sisters to integrate their daily experiences with their spiritual practice. This rhythm of prayer, work, and reflection helps them live out their mission of compassionate service, following the example of St. Louis Guanella.
